Happy World Environment Day 2008!
TIRANA 5 June 2008 - The environment took centre stage in Tirana as the United Nations and World Bank joined forces to promote World Environment Day, commemorated each year on 5 June. The event is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action.
During the event UN volunteers and the Youth Voice Group Albania met with members of the public to discuss the importance of environmental issues and hand out small potted plants to raise awareness of environmental sustainability. In a joint press statement with Mr. Shigeo Katsu, Vice President of the World Bank for Europe and Asia, Ms. Gulden Turkoz-Cosslett, the UN Resident Coordinator in Albania, reaffirmed UN commitment to raising awareness of protecting the environment and making sure that politicians, parliamentarians, young people and citizens have knowledge about safeguarding the environment.

Bajza Railway Station Shkodra 28 March 2008
As part of a regional project involving Western Balkan countries, Bajza Railway Station in Shkodra will undergo a full environmental cleanup and site remediation from a stockpile of toxic chemicals, enabling the local government and Bajza railway station to use the rehabilitated storehouse and improve sustainable development in the area. Photos are of the contaminated areas at Bajza Railway Station before cleanup.

Stand Up! and Speak Out! activities were organized on the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on 17 October 2007 with 6000 students participating. Other events during Poverty Week were organized, such as a student art exhibit on the theme of Climate Change.
